Although baby showers aren't an Amish tradition, Bailey King wants to celebrate Emily Keim's forthcoming bundle of joy. It's the least she can do for her hardworking assistant at Swissmen Sweets, especially with Emily being estranged from her siblings. Everyone in Harvest, Ohio has gathered at the town gazebo—decked out in lemon-themed décor to add some of Emily's favorite flavor to the festivities—including Juliet Brook, Jethro the Pig, and in a last-minute invite, Emily's sister Esther Esh.
But Esther isn't the only surprise guest. A mysterious Amish woman confronts Emily claiming to know about her secret shame—the child she had as a teenager who was given up for adoption. The stranger vanishes before Bailey could find out who she was and if she knew what happened to Emily's first baby. Later that evening, the woman reappears—dead in Esh Family Pretzels, with a threatening letter written by Esther found on her body.
Emily knows her sister is not a murderer and convinces Bailey to help clear Esther's name and put the squeeze on the real killer . . .

A small Ohio town where both Amish and "English" people live attracts tourists, babies, and killers. Bailey King is not Amish, but the grandmother with whom she runs Swissmen Sweets is, so she has a foot in both camps in Harvest. She also has a cable television show filmed in New York and a busy boyfriend in Deputy Aiden Brody, whom she's helped solve several murder cases. Long ago, when her assistant, Emily Keim, was a teenager, the girl's family forced her to give up a baby she bore out of wedlock. Now that Emily's pregnant again, her friends decide to have a baby shower, something Esther Esh, Emily's grumpy sister, would never have thought of on her own. Soon after a stranger approaches Emily and says she's looking forward to Emily's baby meeting her older sibling, the stranger's found dead in the family pretzel shop Esther runs. Bailey knows that she must investigate to protect Emily. A threatening letter from Esther that Aiden finds on the body identifies the stranger as Rosemary Weiss, from nearby Wooster. Although Bailey's shaken by a job offer Aiden's received from Ohio's Bureau of Criminal Investigation, which would take him away from Harvest, she soldiers on. Tracking down Emily's daughter, Hannah, is the easy part of her quest for the truth. The hard part is choosing the most likely suspect from among the many Rosemary's past provides before the guilty party strikes again. Quirky characters add depth to a romantic mystery that explores cultural divides.COPYRIGHT(2021) Kirkus Reviews, ALL RIGHTS RESERVED.

Emily Keim, an Amish newlywed working at Bailey King's candy shop in Harvest, Ohio, deep in Amish country, is beloved by both the Amish and English (non-Amish) communities, whose women have come together for a celebratory, lemon-themed baby shower in the gazebo on the village green. They invite Emily's estranged sister, Esther Esh, at Emily's request, but she does not come, as she disapproves of Emily for not working in the family business. Most of the guests fail to notice an unknown Amish woman at the gathering, whose conversation shakes Emily. Later that night, Esther shows up at the candy shop to ask Bailey to call the police because the unknown woman has been found dead at Esh Family Pretzels. Emily is sure her sister is innocent and asks Bailey's help. Despite the warnings from her sheriff's-deputy boyfriend, Bailey investigates, drawing out secrets from both the Amish and English, and exposing a very different world from the one seen by tourists visiting the sleepy little town. This ninth in the series will attract cozy fans.COPYRIGHT(2021) Booklist, ALL RIGHTS RESERVED.
