Although baby showers aren't an Amish tradition, Bailey King wants to celebrate Emily Keim's forthcoming bundle of joy. It's the least she can do for her hardworking assistant at Swissmen Sweets, especially with Emily being estranged from her siblings. She also has a cable television show filmed in New York and a busy boyfriend in Deputy Aiden Brody, whom she's helped solve several murder cases. Long ago, when her assistant, Emily Keim, was a teenager, the girl's family forced her to give up a baby she bore out of wedlock. Now that Emily's pregnant again, her friends decide to have a baby shower, something Esther Esh, Emily's grumpy sister, would never have thought of on her own. Soon after a stranger approaches Emily and says she's looking forward to Emily's baby meeting her older sibling, the stranger's found dead in the family pretzel shop Esther runs. Bailey knows that she must investigate to protect Emily. A threatening letter from Esther that Aiden finds on the body identifies the stranger as Rosemary Weiss, from nearby Wooster. Although Bailey's shaken by a job offer Aiden's received from Ohio's Bureau of Criminal Investigation, which would take him away from Harvest, she soldiers on. Emily Keim, an Amish newlywed working at Bailey King's candy shop in Harvest, Ohio, deep in Amish country, is beloved by both the Amish and English (non-Amish) communities, whose women have come together for a celebratory, lemon-themed baby shower in the gazebo on the village green. They invite Emily's estranged sister, Esther Esh, at Emily's request, but she does not come, as she disapproves of Emily for not working in the family business. Most of the guests fail to notice an unknown Amish woman at the gathering, whose conversation shakes Emily. Later that night, Esther shows up at the candy shop to ask Bailey to call the police because the unknown woman has been found dead at Esh Family Pretzels. Emily is sure her sister is innocent and asks Bailey's help. Despite the warnings from her sheriff's-deputy boyfriend, Bailey investigates, drawing out secrets from both the Amish and English, and exposing a very different world from the one seen by tourists visiting the sleepy little town.
